ADDITIVE MANUFACTURING Leveraging on-demand manufacturing

… says Ravi Ranjan, Co-founder, Chizel in this interview with Juili Eklahare. Chizel first started as a 3D Printing company and then decided to become a cloud-based manufacturing platform. Ranjan shares about this change brought about in the company, his views on how manufacturers can start on their digitalisation journey, why buyers need to move to more flexible capacity-driven subcontracting model and where the start-up sees itself in the next five years. Excerpts…

Chizel first started as a 3D Printing company. What made you decide to make it a cloud-based manufacturing platform?

Chizel started as a 3D Printing company that brought the largest type of materials and machines under one roof for its customers. Our customers loved our service and convenience of having a one-stop shop for all their 3D Printing needs. They wanted us to expand our offerings and cater to a larger share of their manufacturing needs. To do this, we needed a very scalable and convenient method. That is where we took the digital route, bringing the entire manufacturing at one dashboard through our cloud-based manufacturing platform.

Your start-up has over 25 partners across India. How do you manage the partner network across the country, making sure that reliable quality output is provided?

We have a dedicated team and very stringent manufacturing partner onboarding process, where the partners need to score a minimum qualifying score to become part of our network and start receiving orders. Once they have been brought on board, our partner success team gets in regular touch with them through a manufacturing partner app and dashboard, making the communication and order tracking seamless, ensuring quality parts every time.

Do you have any advice as to how manufacturers can start on their digitalisation journey?

To start with their digital journey, manufacturers need to start leveraging digital technologies for critical business processes, sales and marketing, production and fulfillment. Due to internet adoption and GST implementation, many such softwares have come up in the last two years.

You believe that your customers should have the ability to manufacture low volume productions that provide flexibility to change the design and be more responsive towards market demands. How do you think the customers can achieve this and what role do you play as a start-up to help them get there?

To be more responsive towards the market demands, buyers need to move from a fixed set of supplier-driven subcontracting model to a more flexible capacity-driven subcontracting model. The intent should be to have real-time access to manufacturing capacity, which can be scaled up and down based on the demand. This is where our manufacturing platform comes into the picture, which connects flexible demand with a flexible production capacity of hundreds of manufacturing partners across machining, sheet metal manufacturing, fabrication, Additive Manufacturing and vacuum casting in real-time. The buyers get to leverage on-demand manufacturing and respond to their customers faster. On the other hand, the manufacturers get to increase their capacity utilisation by 30-50%, creating a win-win situation for both the parties.

What does Chizel have planned five years down the line for itself?

We see ourselves as a large manufacturing marketplace, facilitating almost all manufacturing verticals by creating an ecosystem of technology, capital, logistics and allied services. Our aim is to connect the production capacities of over four million SMEs in India involved in the manufacturing of engineering components and make this available to buyers globally.
